I would like to thank my friend Rachel Norton for the great blog post that she wrote in support of Why Tuesday SF. The full post can be read below or on her website at: http://rachelnorton.com/2010/03/30/why-tuesday/
My friend Alex Tourk has recently enlisted me in a new project he is working on for November — an effort to increase voter turnout by allowing people to vote on a day other than Tuesday. Alex says:
Over the past 10 elections we have averaged 47% voter turnout of eligible voters. That’s abysmal for a city that considers itself to be politically savvy. Less than half of our population is participating in the democratic process; electing our leaders, and making important decisions for the future of our City.
Like many of us, I didn’t grow up in San Francisco, but I’ve called this city my home for 16 years and plan to for the rest of my life. I have worked in SF politics because I believe in this city and that we can make life better for our children.
But then I heard that even in 2008 when Obama invigorated the electorate like no one in a generation, our turnout was still worse than Bulgaria’s.
On average only 47.2% of San Franciscans have participated in the last 10 elections. Tell me that’s not wrong. Why aren’t people voting?
Have we made it too hard to leave work on a Tuesday afternoon, to stand in line for an hour just to vote? Read the rest of this entry »
